By law, generic prescription drugs are only required to contain 80% or more of the drug. They are NOT the same as the brand name prescriptions.In many cases this is not an issue, but in some cases such as Synthroid and psychiatric drugs (Paxil, Zoloft etc.) it is essential to the treatment of the patient that the prescription is consistently the same dosage.Many pharmacies use different brands of generics based on their cost. You can be getting 80% of a drug during one refill and then the next time get 85% or another percentage if the pharmacy purchases a different manufacturers product.
